【TESOL】Response to Sarah Warshauer Freedman's "Moving Writing Research into the 21st Century"

by

Sarah Warshauer Freedman, "Moving Writing Research into the 21st Century", ed. Lynn Z. Bloom, Donald A. Daiker, Edward M. White, Composition in the 21 Century: Crisis and Change. I can highly recommend it for the graduate level of research.

Freedman shows her concerns that moving into the 21st century, we will likely continue to be faced with the challenge of what is the best way to educate diverse populations. As is mentioned by Freedman, finding the way of creating the ability of a diverse citizenry both in the social and the cognitive ways, is "new invitations to literacy"(1049).

Freedman's study shows the importance of creating a safe environment in the classroom. Her research has revealed the difference between the U.S. teacher and the U.K. teacher in their approach for teaching students.

I think that there are fundamental differences between the two countries. For a diverse population in the U.S., we need holistic approach viewing "how theory enters practice"(1053), since the measurement for students' development will be diverse according to the diversity of populations.

I believe that the difference in national character will definitely affect their writing. It means that what is successful in the U.S. educational strategy will not always be successful in the U.K. and vice versa. The same holds true for the classes of English learning. Each group has different characteristics. It means that what is effective for the class might not be useful for another class. Therefore, a teacher has to gain perspective on a difference between individuals, and a difference between groups.
